Microsoft’s Windows Phone officially reached the end of its life on January 14, 2020, which is the same day as Windows 7. Lumia devices, first created by Nokia and later by Microsoft Mobile, were specifically designed to run Windows Phone. Among the Lumia lineup, the Lumia 520 stood out as one of the most popular models and also my first smartphone. My Lumia 520 was broken, so after 10 years, I decided to get a Lumia 640 XL to see what it can still do in 2025.
Lumia 520
My first smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 520, holds a special place in my heart. I remember the sunny afternoon when I unboxed it, marveling at its vibrant, replaceable back cover and compact, sleek design. It felt premium, was easy to handle, and fit perfectly in my hand.
The Lumia 520 stands out for its simplicity. Windows Phone 8.1’s Live Tiles (at the point I got it) offered a fresh, intuitive interface, eliminating complicated menus. For a beginner like me after using physical keypad phone, its performance was reliable and met all my needs.
It has a 5 MP camera, which although it looks simple and outdated today, was still cutting-edge at the time. It allowed me to capture precious moments easily.
Modern smartphones are powerful and feature-rich, but the simplicity and functionality of the Lumia 520 evoke nostalgia. It was everything I wanted at the time and more.
Ok so after 10 years, I have to admit that I couldn’t remember its specifications, so I had to Google them. Here it is:
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8227 2 x 1 GHz, ARMv7 |
| Memory | 1 GB |
| Storage | 8 GB SSD |
| Battery | 1430 mAh |

Lumia 640 XL
After many years, Windows Phone and my Lumia 520 were dead (mine broke before the series ended). While browsing the news one day, I saw Microsoft was releasing Windows 11 ARM, which reminded me of Windows Phone. Curious about the fate of Microsoft’s failed product, I decided to buy a Lumia 640 XL to test it out.
